From Gressoney-Saint-Jean, my friend and I went to the village of Bard (pop. 134).  On the other side of the river is the village on Hône (pop. 1,200).  The altitude is lower here, about 1300 ft (400 m).  These villages are located in a narrow gorge at the entrance to the Aosta Valley.  High above the towns there is a huge fort, built in the 1830s, the Fort of Bard.  It was built on the site of the other fortifications (a 10^th-century castle and before that, a 5^th-century structure). 

In 1800, 400 soldiers (in the castle that preceded the Fort of Bard) thwarted an attempt on the part of Napoleon and an army of 40,000 men to invade the Aosta Valley.  (It is said that Napoleon was extremely angry.)

There is a hotel at the top of the Fort of Bard, the Hotel Cavour, where we spent one night.  You have to take four cable cars to get to the hotel!

Da Gressoney-Saint-Jean sono andata con il mio amico al villaggio di Bard (134 abitanti).  Dall’altra parte del fiume si trova il villaggio di Hône (1200 abitanti).  L’altitudine qui è più bassa, circa 1300 piedi (400 m).  Questi paesi si trovano in una stretta gola all’ingresso della Valle d’Aosta.  In alto sopra i villaggi c’è un’enorme forte costruito negli anni diciotto-trenta, il Forte di Bard.  Fu costruito sul posto di altre fortificazioni (un castello del X secolo e prima ancora una stuttura del V secolo). 

Nel 1800, 400 soldati (nel castello che precedeva il Forte di Bard) sventarono un tentativo da parte di Napoleone e un esercito di 40.000 soldati di invadere la Valle d’Aosta.  (Si dice che Napoleone fosse arrabbiatissimo.)

C’è un hotel in cima al Forte di Bard chiamato Hotel Cavour, dove abbiamo passato una notte.  Bisogna prendere quattro funicolari per raggiungiere l’hotel!

I ate a wonderful Piedmontese dessert called “bunet” (or “bonet”) in Bard.  It’s made with cocoa, milk, sugar, eggs, rum, and amaretti (Italian almond cookies).  People have been eating this dessert since at least the 13th century!       

A Bard ho mangiato un meraviglioso dolce piemontese chiamato “bunet” (o “bonet”).  È fatto con cacao, latte, zucchero, uova, rum e amaretti (biscotti alle mandorle).  Questo dolce si mangia almeno dal XIII secolo!
