One thing I’ve discovered on this trip is how easy it is to take the train in Italy.  The Trenitalia website works pretty well (after you learn a trick or two, like being sure to enter an Italian phone number – any one will do, say the number of your hotel – instead of your American one, which will be rejected).  There is a Trenitalia app you can download that shows your journey, departure/arrival times, if your train is running late, what track your connection is leaving from, etc.  The trains themselves are clean and comfortable.  There is even free WiFi on the train, if you happen to need that, and also plugs below the seats for charging your phone or laptop.  I saw many people making business calls and working on their laptops.  (Interestingly, the high-speed trains have a “silent section” where you can book a seat if you don’t want to listen to all the chatter.)

Una cosa che ho scoperto durante questo viaggio è quanto sia facile prendere il treno in Italia.  Il sito di Trenitalia funziona abbastanza bene (dopo aver imparato ad inserire un numero di telefono italiano, ad esempio il numero dell’hotel, invece di quello americano, che verrà rifiutato).  Si può scaricare l’app di Trenitalia che mostra il proprio viaggio, gli orari di partenze e arrivi, se il treno è in ritardo, da quale binario parte il treno, ecc.  I treni sono puliti e comodi.  C’è il WiFi gratuito sul treno, se ne hai bisogno, e anche ci sono prese elettriche sotto i sedili per caricare il cellulare o il portatile.  Ho visto molte persone fare chiamate di lavoro e lavorare su portatile.  (Curiosamente, i treni ad alta velocità hanno una “sezione silenziosa” dove si può prenotare un posto se non si vuole ascoltare il chiacchiericcio.)

Lake Orta is of the smaller Italian Lakes located south of the Alps.  I spent one night in the small town of Orta San Giulio (pop. 1200).

I returned to Bologna from Lake Orta on October 18^th, then rested for two days before heading to Milan.  (It took me a while to recover from that strenuous hike up the mountain in Gressoney-Saint-Jean.)  Milan is a big city (pop. 1.4 million; metro area 3.1 million).  Lots of people walking around (in more of a hurry than people on the streets of Bologna) talking on or staring at their cell phones.  There was noticeably more English in Milan, on signs and restaurant menus, etc. 

I stayed in a hotel in the Magenta District, not too far from the city center.  The first afternoon I went to the Museum of Science and Technology to see the exhibit about Leonardo da Vinci.  There were wooden models of many of the machines that da Vinci drew, imagined, or constructed.  (Unfortunately it was so dark in the museum that it was impossible to take decent photos.)

That evening I had dinner at an excellent seafood restaurant called Andry:  tuna tartare, raw artichoke salad, swordfish, crema catalana (similar to crème brulée), and limoncello to finish.

Sono tornata a Bologna dal Lago d’Orta il 18 ottobre, poi mi sono riposata due giorni prima di andare a Milano.  (Mi ci è voluto del tempo per riprendermi dall’escursione faticosa in montagna in Gressoney-Saint-Jean.)  Milan è una grande città (1,4 milioni abitanti; area metropolitana di 3,1 milioni abitanti).  C’erano molte persone per strada (più frettolose dei bolognesi) che guardavano o parlavano al cellulari.  C’era notevolmente più inglese a Milano, sulle insegne e sui menù dei ristoranti, ecc.

Ho soggiornato in un hotel nel quartiere Magenta, non lontano dal centro di Milano.  Nel primo pomeriggio sono andata al Museo delle Scienze e delle Tecnologie per vedere la mostra su Leonardo da Vinci.  C’erano modelli in legno di molte delle macchine che da Vinci ha disegnato, immaginato o costruito.  (Purtroppo era così buio nel museo che era impossibile scattare foto.)

La sera ho cenato in un ottimo ristorante di pesce chiamato Andry:  tartare di tonno, insalta di carciofi crudi, pesce spada, crema catalana e limoncello per finire.

The next day I walked 6 miles around Milan.  Not far from my hotel was the Basilica di Sant’Ambrogio, founded by Saint Ambrose (the patron saint of Milan) in the 4^th century A.D.  The current Romanesque church was built in the 12^th century (with parts restored after it was damaged by bombing during WWII).

Il giorno seguente ho camminato per 6 miglia in giro per Milano.  Non lontano dall’hotel si trovava la Basilica di Sant’Ambrogio, fondata da Sant’Ambrogio (il santo patrono di Milano) nel IV secolo d.C.  L’attuale chiesa romanica fu costruita nel XII secolo (con parti ristaurate dopo che la chiesa fu danneggiata dai bombardamenti durante la seconda guerra mondiale).

This is the Milan Duomo (the Milan Cathedral), the 3^rd-largest cathedral in the world.  They started building it in 1386, and the finishing touches were completed in 1965.

Just across the Piazza from the cathedral is the Galleria di Vittorio Emanuele II, one of the oldest shopping centers in the world, completed in 1877.  (Vittorio Emanuele II was King of Italy from 1861 to 1878.)  I didn’t buy anything here (not being inclined to shop at Prada, Gucci, or Louis Vuitton).  In 2012, they kicked out the McDonald’s that had been in the Galleria for 20 years so that Prada could open a second store.  (Apparently afterward there was a nasty lawsuit.  The McDonald’s is now across the street.)

Vicino al Duomo si trova la Galleria di Vittorio Emanuele II, uno di centri commerciali più antichi del mondo, completato nel 1877.  (Vittorio Emanuele II fu Re d’Italia dal 1861 al 1878.)  Non ho comprato niente qui.  (Non sono incline a fare acquisti da Prada, Gucci, o Louis Vuitton.)  Nel 2012 hanno buttato fuori il McDonald’s che era stato nella Galleria per 20 anni in modo che Prada potesse aprire un secondo negozio.  (A quanto pare c’è stata una brutta causa in seguito.  Adesso il McDonald’s è dall’altra parte della strada.)

A 15-minute walk from the Duomo is the Castello Sforzesco (the Sforza Castle) built in the 15^th century by the Duke of Milan, Francesco Sforza, and restored in the early 20^th century.  (There was a Roman fortification on the same site many centuries earlier when Milan was the capital of the Western Roman Empire.  It was called “Mediolanum” at the time, meaning “in the middle of a plain”.  It was founded by Celtic tribes before the Romans took over.)  This enormity of this castle is difficult to capture in photos.

A 15 minuti a piedi dal Duomo si trova il Castello Sforzesco costruito nel XV secolo dal Duca di Milano, Francesco Sforza, e restaurato all’inizio del XX secolo.  (Molti secoli prima, quando Milano era la capitale dell’Impero Romano d’Occidente, nello stesso posto c’era una fortificazione romano.  All’epoca si chiamava “Mediolanum” che significa “in mezzo alla pianura”.  Fu fondata da tribù celtiche prima che i romani prendessero il potere.)

Next to the castle is the lovely Sempione Park and the Arch of Peace, the latter completed in 1838, on the site of the former Roman gate that was part of the ancient city walls.

Accanto al castello si trova il bellissimo Parco Sempione e l’Arco della Pace, il secondo completato nel 1838, al posto di un’antica porta romana che faceva parte di un’antica cinta.

This was my reward for so much walking:  Sicilian pistachio gelato.  (I never would have survived the 40-minute walk to the train station without it!  I probably should have taken a taxi . . . .)
