The University of Bologna was founded in 1088, eight years before the founding of the University of Oxford in England.  It is a very prestigious university and attracts scholars, students, and intellectuals from all over the world.  Here are a few photos of the university:

Fun fact:  Bettisia Gozzadini (1209 – 1261) is believed to be the first woman to teach at a university.  She came from the Bolognese nobility.  She studied philosophy and law, and taught law at the University of Bologna from 1239.

Curiosità: Bettisia Gozzadini (1209 – 1261) è ritenuta la prima donna ad insegnare in un’università.  Veniva dalla nobiltà bolognese.  Studiò filosofia e giurisprudenza e dal 1239 insegnò giurisprudenza all’Università di Bologna.

This structure (below) is the Porta San Donato (San Donato Gate), which was formerly part of the ancient city walls of Bologna.  Built in the second half the of the 13^th century.

Questa struttura (sotto) è la Porta San Donato, che in precendenza apparteneva alle antiche mura della città di Bologna.  Costruita nella seconda metà del XIII secolo.

Today’s new vocabulary:  circuito elettrico/electric circuit; interruttore della luce/light switch; interruttore or quadro elettrico/circuit breaker.  Why?  Because when I returned to the apartment after a long afternoon of walking, I flipped the light switch in the living room.  I heard a brief sound.  After that, half the lights in the apartment no longer worked, including in the kitchen and the bathroom.  I sent a WhatsApp message to Francesco, my very nice landlord.  He told me that there was a circuit breaker on the wall in the living room (it’s small and up high) and he advised me to flip up all the switches.  I checked.  Two of the switches weren’t up.  I flipped them up and voila! all the lights were working again.

Nuovo vocabulario di oggi:  circuito elettrico, interruttore della luce, interruttore (o quadro elettrico).  Perché?  Perché quando sono tornata all’appartamento dopo un pomeriggio lunghissimo di passieggiate, ho premuto l’interruttore della luce in soggiorno.  Ho sentito subito un breve rumore.  Dopo di che, metà delle luci dell’appartamento non funzionava più, nemmeno in cucina e in bagno.  Ho mandato un messaggio WhatsApp a Francesco, il proprietario molto gentile.  Mi ha detto che c’era un interruttore sulla parete in soggiorno (è piccolo e in alto) e mi ha consigliato di alzare tutti i pulsanti.  L’ho controllato.  Due dei pulsante non erano alzati.  Li ho alzati e voila! tutte le luci funzionavano di nuovo!
